Chief Academic Officer (CAO)
An innovative new Associate Degree Nursing program is seeking a Chief Academic Officer to implement a new prelicensure nursing program in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. This nursing position will have an opportunity to provide a high-quality, creative education to student nurses in close collaboration with the school’s hospital partners. Texas School of Health Sciences is a new, private educational institution in Weslaco, TX, established to address the need for Registered Nurses in the Rio Grande Valley by offering a comprehensive academic program that graduates high-quality nurses who will continue to work in the area.
Qualifications for these positions include:
Meets all requirements of the Texas Board of Nursing for RN program administrators
A minimum of five years experience in a pre-licensure RN program with a track record of success
A minimum of two years of administrative experience and demonstrated leadership skills

Qualification of Chief Academic Officer (CAO)
1. Holds a current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Texas.
2. Holds a terminal degree (PhD, EdD, or DNP) in nursing or a related degree. If the terminal degree is not in nursing, the candidate must hold an MSN.
3. Has at least 5 years teaching experience in a professional nursing education program.
4. Has a minimum of 2 years administrative experience within a professional nursing education program with demonstrated ability to:
a. Achieve high student success rates
b. Develop an environment that supports:
· faculty and student satisfaction
· continuous quality improvement
· fair and equitable decision-making
c. Serve as a positive role model for the program and its students
d. Foster collaborative relationships with partnering organizations
e. Be flexible in evolving situations
5. Possesses excellent communication (written and oral) and analytical skills.
6. Provides a track record of excellent classroom teaching and evaluation of faculty and students.
7. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Successful completion of criminal background check and drug screening, required immunizations, and current BLS and HIPAA certifications are a requirement of employment.
Responsibilities of the CAO
1. Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program.
2. Implements the School's philosophy, curriculum, program outcomes, and course objectives through teaching and service to the school.
3. Fosters collaboration with hospital partners.
4. Works with hospital Nursing representatives to select and evaluate clinical sites within the partnering hospital system.
5. Hires and supervises faculty and adjunct faculty.
6. Promotes professional growth of the nursing faculty, encourages student learning and retention, and nurtures an environment focused on providing the highest quality of care to patients.
7. In conjunction with the President and Chief Executive Officer, develops and maintains nursing department budget and pursues other funding sources, such as grants.
8. Develops and evaluates the admission, progression, and dismissal of students, verifying students’ completion of program requirements.
9. Maintains and revises the Total Plan for Evaluation, leading efforts for continuous quality improvement of the program.
10. Maintains and updates student and faculty handbooks, assuring accurate and up-to-date content of program policies and procedures; ensures consistency between student handbook, course syllabi, and Board of Nursing regulations.
11. Encourages collaboration among the nursing and general education faculty.
12. Leads the Student Success Program.
13. Provides a positive, inclusive learning environment that respects the diverse learning needs of students.
14. Chairs the Nursing Faculty Organization function; coordinates all departmental faculty committees.
15. Chairs the Nursing Advisory Committee.
16. Participates in the Board of Directors meetings.
17. Completes and submits the Texas Board of Nursing Affidavit of Graduation and the NEPIS and CANEP by the required dates.
The CAO reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer.
