Job Summary

Employee is responsible for the accurate and timely reading of residential and commercial water meter to facilitate customer billing. The Meter Reader will interact with the general public on a daily basis and performs minor water meter maintenance. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends.

Essential Job Functions

Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
Performs after hours work as required (nights and weekends)
Walks or drives truck over established rout and takes reading of meter dials.
Assist with emergency response as needed by city hall and local EOC.
Inspects and reads water meters, records volumes and connections for defect, damage, and unauthorized connections.
Indicates meter irregularities, damaged equipment or impediments to meter access and reports them.
Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuation.
Returns route book to business office for billing purposes.
As directed connects and disconnects utility services at specific locations.
Attend training sessions as required to maintain abreast of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements.
Unit check by maintaining record on usage, mileage, maintenance of the city owned motor vehicle and supplies to compete tasks.
Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Must have High School diploma, or equivalent (GED)
One (1) year of related work experience to perform such job.
Applicant must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at City's expense.
Applicant must have current valid Class "C" Driver's License and be insurable.
Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months of hire date.
Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Safe and effective operation of water meter installation and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of City Water meter operations.
Customer service techniques.
Ability to read and interpret instructions regarding safe and efficient use of equipment & related materials, paying careful attention to details.
Basic arithmetic principles.
Maintain effective working relations.
Understanding simple geography relating to City streets.
Knowledge of operating equipment such as vehicles, grass cutting, tools, and machinery.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Continuous walking of 10-15 miles per day in all weather conditions.
Considerable bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting heavy objects (up to 60 lbs.)
Exposure to vicious dogs, snakes, and/or insects.
Working and possible driving in adverse weather conditions.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing.
