Job Title: District Library Clerk Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:
 
 
Provide well-organized, smoothly functioning campus libraries and plan, organize, coordinate, oversee, and provide library services to student’s district wide. Schedule will entail 3 days at the McAllen Campus and 2 days at the Harlingen campus with occasional visits to Weslaco and Pearland campuses as instructed.
 
 
Qualifications/Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent and 48 college hours required
  • 1 year clerical experience
  • 1 year experience working with children
 
 
Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills.
  • Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Effective, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assist in providing virtual/distance learning to students via Google Classroom and other multimedia options in response to pandemics, natural disasters, catastrophic events, etc.
 
 
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
 
 
Library Program Support
  • Provide individual instruction and assistance to individual students or small groups in using library media center resources including computers and other equipment.
  • Check books in and out. Collect and record fines.
  • Ready materials for classroom or reserve collection use as requested by teachers.
  • Request and schedule use of materials from outside sources including regional education service center.
  • Prepare bulletin boards and displays and assist in preparing instructional materials as requested.
  • Make recommendations for acquisitions of materials and equipment as needed.
  • Reinforce reading instructions as directed by teachers. May read to small groups of students and listen to individual students read aloud.
  • Coordinate library programs and events such as accelerated reading, book fairs, author visits, award ceremonies, reading celebrations, etc. at each campus.

Accounting and Inventory

  • Maintain library catalog. Process, organize, distribute, and maintain inventory of library/media center resources.
  • Assist in library inventories and weeding of library media center materials using district software and programs.
  • Receive and process new books, materials, and equipment and reconcile with packing slips and invoices.
  • Maintain records of lost materials and prepare parent/teacher notification as needed.
  • Shelve incoming books, materials, and equipment in order to keep materials available to students.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair books, magazines, materials, and equipment. Arrange for repair at outside facilities (e.g., bindery) as directed.

Clerical Support

  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Prepare bibliographies, forms, purchase orders, requisitions, and routine correspondence according to standard procedures.

Student Management

  • Supervise and monitor students as assigned and assist teachers to maintain appropriate student behavior and an orderly atmosphere.
  • Assist with supervision and monitoring of students throughout the school day in and out of the library including the cafeteria, playground, drop-off and dismissal, etc.
Other
  • Maintain library operation.
  • Assist in directing the work of parent volunteers and student aides.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:
 
 
Computer, library book tracking software, telephone, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator and other standard office equipment and peripherals.
 
 
Working Conditions:
 
 
Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required. Frequent district-wide travel and occasional statewide travel is required. Employee may work prolonged or irregular hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, kneel, squat, occasionally bend/stoop, push/pull and twist. Repetitive had motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse is required with occasional reaching, climbing ladders. Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 lbs.); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds). Work inside; work alone; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust. Employee must work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
