The Texas Bar Foundation solicits charitable contributions and provides funding to enhance the rule of law and the system of justice in Texas, especially for programs that relate to legal assistance for the underserved, the administration of justice, ethics in the legal profession, the encouragement of legal research, publications and forums, and education of the third branch of government.
Recently, the Texas Bar Foundation awarded a grant to the Valley Nature Center to address juvenile delinquency and engage at-risk kids. Students will participate in STEM education and complete nature-based projects. Working with Weslaco ISD, The Valley Nature Center uses nature and the outdoors as a vehicle to help students stay in school, become passionate about a new subject, and work toward a career.
“The Valley Nature Center is a pillar in our community, collaborating with educators to bridge the learning gaps and provide invaluable opportunities for students to give back to our community while learning,” said Josefina Ledesma, an educator at Weslaco East High School.
Valley Nature Center Executive Director Hollie Johnston is excited about the project that is being funded. “We are deeply grateful to receive support from the Texas Bar Foundation! This generous funding will allow us to broaden our programming for both youth and adults, helping participants gain the hours, credits, and hands-on experience they need to achieve their goals and take the next steps toward greater accomplishments. Thank you, Texas Bar Foundation, for investing in education, opportunity, and community growth!”
Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $29 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation's largest charitably funded bar foundation.
The mission of the Valley Nature Center is to provide educational opportunities, and foster understanding and appreciation of the Lower Rio Grande Valley's unique natural communities of flora and fauna. We work in the best interests of local children, families, and native habitat. Our vision is that every child can enjoy a healthy lifestyle in a healthy natural environment.
