Weslaco Museum Artist Reception
The Museum will host an art reception in honor of the Flores family who will be displaying their artwork throughout the month of May. Roel Flores didn’t start life as an artist. He began his artistic career as a bass guitarist playing with many of the Valley’s conjunto bands. This love of his began when he was very young and spanned over 60 years.
In 1995, after having some health issues, Roel’s daughter gave him some paints and brushes. He immediately took to painting. Since he began, his art has been sponsored by the Smithsonian as well as being exhibited across Texas, and in parts of Mexico. In 2014, Roel received a proclamation from President Obama in recognition of his artwork and his contribution to the American Culture.
Roel and his wife have 5 children and many grandchildren. From that group, Roel’s grandson Daniel seems to have gotten his grandfather’s talent for art. Daniel has his own unique style which differs from his grandfather, but is no less impressive.
Juan Flores, Roel’s brother, is another talented member of this extraordinary local family. Like his brother, Juan enjoys painting on canvas. However, Juan is not only a painter, but is also an accomplished wood carver. However, the museum will only be displaying his paintings for the month of May.
